The Estaleirinho hactchery, located in the state of Santa Catharina counts with breeding areas (total output capacity of 15 millions nauplii per day) and larva culture sites (production capacity of 60 millions larvae per month).
The state of Santa Catarina, which counts with 1500 ha of shrimp culture ponds, was heavily affected by a breakout of the WSSV in 2004, leading to massive economical losses.
In august 2007, for the first time in southern Brazil, a program of disease prevention based on individual certification of broodstock using PCR technique has been launched in order to exclude WSSV and IHHNV carriers as well as other posible viruses affecting the production in Brazil. Selected breeders have survived high exposure to WSSV, hypoxia stress and passed through a whole winter in outdoor conditions with temperatures lowering until 12°c.
In view of the first positive results observed during the harvest this year, the inversion group (small scale farmers) plans a significant raise of certified larvae production, jumping from a production of 30 millions in 2007 to 70 millions over the 2008-2009 period. |
