In view of the global concern caused by the outbreak of rice pathogens, the CALESA group, through the company CEGRACO S.A, as a part of its integrated development strategy, is implementing an innovative program at the national level: the control and the prevention of pathogens besides the certification of seeds and pathogen-free plants through the use of modern molecular biology techniques.

CEGRACO S.A has fixed as a general objective to develop and implement the use of molecular biology tools in order to obtain sensitive diagnostics and anticipate breakouts of pathologies associated to rice culture in Panama.

  1. Standardize protocols based on molecular biology tools for the specific and sensitive detection of viruses and pathogenic bacteria in plants as well as rice seeds.
  2. Identify viral pathologies and existing bacteria in each areas of rice culture on site.
  3. Offer pathologic diagnostic of national and imported rice seed through molecular techniques.
  4. Provide and facilitate access to laboratory infrastructures and molecular diagnostic services to rice producers
